Wigan Athletic eyeing loan move for West Brom left-back

Wigan Athletic are eyeing a loan move for West Brom left-back Conor Townsend, according to the Daily Mirror live transfer blog(9:34).

The 25-year-old only joined West Brom in the summer but has only made four appearances in the Championship.

A loan move to Wigan looks on the cards for Townsend as he seeks more first-team action.

Townsend started his career at Hull City and rose through the youth ranks at his local side. He went onto play once for the Tigers’ senior side but enjoyed various loan spells away from the KCOM Stadium at Grimsby Town, Chesterfield, Carlisle United, Dundee United and Scunthorpe United.

He signed for Scunthorpe on a permanent deal on a free transfer in January 2016 and became a key player for the Iron. Townsend played 73 times for them in League One and chipped in with four goals. He impressed with his set-pieces.

Hull City tried to re-sign Townsend in the summer but Scunthorpe rejected an offer from them and then West Brom swooped in to sign him.

His move to the Hawthorns hasn’t worked out as of yet but a loan move to Wigan would help him get more minutes under his belt and prove to West Brom what he can do in the Championship.

The Latics have already signed Anthony Pilkington from Cardiff City in this January transfer window and are looking to bring in a couple more players before the end of the month. Could Townsend be the next through the door at the DW Stadium?
