Andy Cannon scored twice as Wrexham returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory at Grimsby Town.

Wrexham's work was done during a first half in which Cannon's brace and Paul Mullin's volley put them firmly in control.

Grimsby pulled a goal back nine minutes from time, Arthur Gnahoua scoring.

The win sees Phil Parkinson's side move up to second in League Two, three points behind leaders Mansfield Town.

Grimsby remain 21st, five points above the relegation zone.

Wrexham's win was a timely boost after failure to win their previous two games - a goalless draw against Harrogate Town and a 1-0 loss at home to Tranmere Rovers.

Cannon's opening goal came five minutes into the game, an effort from 20 yards which gave keeper Harvey Cartwright no chance.

The midfielder unleashed an unstoppable drive to double his side's lead after good work from Mullin and the returning Tom O'Connor.

Mullin's volley from close range completed an emphatic and ruthless first-half display from the visitors.

Gnahoua scored a consolation late on for Grimsby, who finished strongly, but Wrexham held on for a valuable three points.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: "First half I thought was outstanding in very difficult conditions, which was always going to impact on the game.

"But I thought the professionalism the game management was very good today, particularly in the first half.

"It was going to be a first and second ball game and making the right decisions in the conditions but when the moments came it was important that we showed the quality that we did to create those chances and ultimately take them."

Well, Wrexham had already beaten us 3 nil this season, so I wasn't expecting much. And there were no surprises. Nice to get a goal back though. Up the Mariners!

Very happy with that result. The draws for Mansfield and Crewe are a relief, as they were on form a few weeks/months ago. The losses for Newport, Notts County and Tranmere also should normalise Wrexham’s recent results… Come on Wrexham!! Patience and confidence in a match are essential.

Nice win, and so far other matches playing out in a way that helps our title chances. It was great to see Cannon score.

I do wish that Parky would pull Mullin when we’re up by 3 and give Marriott a chance to play more. Last thing we need is a Mullin injury with a multi-goal lead and Marriott with little time with the starters to replace him.

After the run ins we had with Grimsby a few years back I felt this game could have been a bit tricky. Looks like I couldn't be more wrong. Clearly Wrexham are at a higher level now. Promotion and even winning the league is not our of the question. Last game of the season against Stockport should be a good one.

My team easily notched up a away win a few weeks ago and if such a limited player like Cannon can run riot it doesnt say much.

Grimsby away used to be a fixture sides dreaded especially in the Buckley era, now 3 points are like taking candy off a baby

Yet again a BBC Wales sport produced Wrexham match report with no post match interview with the opposing manager, on this case Artell, but Parkinsons are included again without fail.
